Draft Application: Save the Earth

I've got some work to do yet - mostly in establishing Glacier Peaks as a character world and in setting up Julia's backgrounds - but there's enough here that it's useful to have around. Glacier Peaks is an OC canon. This flavor of Julia is may eventually be headed for [community profile] savetheearth.

IC Information:
Name: Julia Cross
Canon: Original
Age: 14 preincarnated; 19 in-game
Preincarnation Appearance: Straight blonde hair to her mid-back and blue eyes; about five feet tall. Slightly tanned, flawless skin. Dresses simply, but tends to have almost a regal air with how she presents herself.
Any differences: Taller (by virtue of being older); her hair's a little shorter, only to her shoulders. (Present PB: Hayden Panettiere.)

World Information: Glacier Peaks Academy. An elite school in Michigan, Glacier Peaks is a school for the best of the best, with a middle school and a high school on the campus. It's a hyper-modern place of learning, and it's known for a bunch of advancements in the fields of science and technology. Less well-known, however, is that it's a school capable of feats not explainable by modern science. Indeed, the school has advanced technology so far that some of its feats can only be chalked up to magic. Of course, this information doesn't leave the school, so it seems like nothing more than a highly-advanced institution. That, however, means the school is watched - by the government, the military, and by the world's top corporations.

On the surface, though, it's a desirable place - students get a top-notch education, there are plenty of faculty to help their wards, the school's remote location means it's less likely to be interfered with, and the amenities are something else. Good boarding facilities, labs everywhere, futuristic design, student leadership... it's everything a kid could dream for from a school. And for most, it'll stay a dream - Glacier Peaks isn't cheap. Only those that can afford the fees, or those that can get a scholarship, need apply.

Preincarnated History: Julia's life growing up was... not pleasant. Her parents resented her, for being more intelligent than them, and they couldn't cope with her. They forbade her to talk to her friends, to spend time after school. They didn't go on trips, or explore, or... really let her out at all. All she could do was spend her days at the library, and in her room. She couldn't take sitting around - it was killing her. She was bright, got good grades, but she was an exile.

So it was a surprise, and a miracle, when Glacier Peaks offered her a scholarship to attend. She spent all of five minutes looking at the invitation before deciding she wanted to go. Her parents, though, wouldn't have it, and they decided on a compromise: Julia would go to the Academy, and her parents would give her a little financial support. In exchange, she wouldn't contact them, and she wouldn't return home unless the school forced her. The terms weren't so bad, in Julia's eyes, and she started to pack right away.

The weekend before classes started. Julia's arrival into Whiteout for the school year wasn't exactly normal -

Reincarnated History:

First Echo: The second instance of the lights in the sky. Looking at them for a good long time, Julia eventually puts her right hand up to block out the light and finds a silver ring that wasn't there before. It doesn't seem to do anything... but it's there, and the one time she tried to leave it somewhere, it wound up back on her desk the next morning.

Preincarnation Personality: Early in her life at Glacier Peaks, Julia is compared to a flower: pretty to look at, but easy to crush. While this is mostly true, it takes a lot to actually break her spirit. When she does lose faith, though, she crashes hard. Over the several years before she came to the academy, Julia learned to be self-sufficient. Aside from financial support, she can take care of pretty much anything on her own - meals, transportation, keeping herself occupied... On the outside, she seems like a normal girl, but within there's a crushing loneliness begging to be addressed. Heather is a godsend in this respect - more on her in a moment.

Julia hides behind her schoolwork as a defense mechanism, and beyond that, in books. As such, she's a little bit of a romantic, having a surprising amount of faith in the world, and in people, considering how she grew up. Beneath the surface, though, there's a deep-seated anger - or perhaps regret - stemming from her parents' effective abandonment, and culminating in her being shipped off to boarding school with no way home, and not welcome even if she could return. She put up a strong front, but inside she was worried about how she'd hold up... and then she met her roommate.

If you were to ask Julia to sum up her feelings for Heather in a single word, she'd happily respond, "a miracle." At quite possibly the lowest point in her life, Heather took her under her wing, and gave her somewhere to come home to at the end of the day. More than ever before, Julia strove to keep Heather in the loop, and do what she could to support her. Heather also gave Julia the courage to rise above what she left, and become someone she could be proud of, in spite of everything.

And rise above she did. The support she got from Heather gave her a new energy, and she flourished at Glacier Peaks, penning breakthrough after breakthrough, and destroying any obstacle in her way with a smile and unbreakable determination. As time passed, and she started to work on what would become her magnum opus, the [[!NAME]], her hunger for knowledge grew ever stronger, and she started to spend days on end in the library, searching for the truths of the universe, and having bright-eyed conversations with Heather every night she could get away with it (which was pretty much every night). When she finally finished the Ring, and was granted a title for her contributions to science, the feeling in her heart was something she could scarely describe. She felt like, if she died at that moment, she'd be okay with it. And if she'd had to go through everything again, she would do it in a heartbeat, for a chance to meet the precious friends she'd made again.

Though she is a little bitter about her parents, she doesn't begrudge others that happily enjoy time with their families. To that end, she's more than happy to spend time with large groups; it makes her feel more complete. She's also protective of her friends, perhaps to an extreme, and will do whatever it takes to keep them safe if something should happen. This, combined with what would become her signature ability (almost to the point of becoming spellcraft), meant she was respected and feared as a lady of war if crossed. And she didn't mind that - she kept a polite, serene exterior, but if there was something harsher within, that was okay. It would ward off trouble, or so she hoped. It didn't, but... well, that's another matter entirely.

Any differences:
Julia's reincarnation has been raised with one guiding tenet: all people are pawns, but well-treated pawns will happily do your bidding better for longer. This makes her a study in contrasts: she knows exactly how to get what she wants from someone, but she will do her level best to either make it worth their while, or mitigate the hassle. No good deed goes uncompensated. But at the same time, Julia demands excellence - she has little patience for failure. She holds herself to the same high standards, and can often be found at the ice-cream parlor after a hard day's work, or at the university well into the night if she can't seem to make something click.

This can make her seem a little shallow sometimes, but if you can tolerate her, she has been known to form lasting bonds, and those that have earned her trust will find she'll walk through fire to keep her friends safe, though she'll swear up and down she was just protecting a vital business asset. She does have issues with being true about her feelings; she tries to downplay her emotions, but they're there under the surface, and after you've spent a little time with her, they're pretty simple, even comically easy, to decipher.

Where her preincarnation was softspoken with a will of tempered steel, Julia here is a commanding young woman with a will of adamantium. She will not back down from anything, leading people to need to drag her away from impossible situations; she'll sulk about it, but she'll understand. However, she's not above shifting the situation into her favor by force, either. More generaly, Julia is a girl of action - she doesn't like sitting on the sidelines and waiting for things to happen. In her idle time, she likes to explore and keep an eye out for anything interesting she might not have seen, and to hang out with her closer acquaintances.

Abilities:
Julia is mostly mundane, though she has one "power" she designs via magitechnology in her first year, constructs in her second, and hones in her third: [[!NAME]]. True to its name, it's a simple, silver band she wears on her right hand. Its power, however, is extraordinary. With the Ring, Julia can shape constructs from thin air, giving them solid form and bringing them into reality. This can encompass pretty much anything, from a patch job for a wall Heather accidentally put a hole in, to notebook paper for class, to a long, light lance, her preferred weapon. There are limitations; she's restricted to whatever her imagination can conjure, and she needs at least a basic understanding of what she's creating - she can't just conjure up a cure for cancer. The other problem is that, whenever she makes something, it takes a physical and mental toll on her - it's exhausting to design the blueprint for something, and bringing it into the world has an energy cost she must pay. She also, for whatever reason, has trouble with organics - she can make something organic, or with organic components, but it's much more "expensive," in terms of energy and time. It's part of the reason the shaft of her lance is made from lightweight metal, rather than more classical wood. Without her ring as a tool, she can't use any of this; the Ring itself contains various equations, materials, and general support for her abilities. Should she ever meet someone with another Ring, they can work together to manifest something larger and more complicated; alternately, they may be able to help her work around her limitations (anything she doesn't know how to make, or something organic in nature).

Also, it's not so much an ability, but Julia has earned a title at the Academy. Titles are a major achievement; they represent that the student has accomplished something big, and they are honored for their work. Julia's is [[!NAME]].
